Candle Fragrance 101
The secret to a candle that makes you swoon?
It’s all in the notes.
Did you know?
Candles are made up of three layers of scent, called notes. Each unfolds over time, creating a complex and evolving experience.
Top Notes: These are the first scents you smell when you light your candle. They’re bright, fresh, and attention-grabbing (i.e. mint, citrus, eucalyptus.)
Middle Notes: These scents bloom after the top notes fade, forming the body of the fragrance. They’re deeper, richer, and more complex (i.e. leather, jasmine, cedarwood.)
Base Notes: These linger the longest, giving your candle its lasting warmth and depth (i.e. musk, oud, tonka bean, amber.)
How to help your candle last
To make sure your candle burns beautifully and lasts as long as possible, here’s what you need to know:
1. Trim Your Wick
Before every burn, trim the wick to about ¼ inch. This helps prevent soot, mushrooming, and uneven burning. (Bonus: it makes your candle burn cleaner and last longer.)
2. Let the Wax Pool
On your first burn, let the melted wax reach all the way to the edges of the jar before blowing it out - usually about 2-3 hours. This prevents tunneling (where wax builds up along the sides and you lose hours of burn time).
3. Keep It Clean
If you see any soot or debris on the surface, carefully remove it once the wax is cool. A clean surface ensures a smoother burn and better scent throw.
4. Don’t Over-Burn
Keep each burn session around 3-4 hours max. Longer burns can cause your wick to “mushroom” and shorten the life of your candle.
5. Store It Smart
When not in use, store your candle in a cool, dry place, away from direct sunlight. This helps preserve both the wax and the scent. Keep the cover on, if possible.
6. Safety First
Always burn on a heat-safe surface, keep away from drafts, and never leave your candle unattended. (We love obsession, but not the fiery kind.)
